What to Do Immediately After an Auto Accident

Auto Accident

It is understandable to be shook up and upset after experiencing a serious auto accident that is not your fault. Out of the blue, you go from heading toward a destination to an emergency situation. The first concern is whether you or anyone else involved in the accident is injured and then a rush of other thoughts may go through your head. Even though this is a stressful scenario, it is important to know what you need to do to protect yourself and your family in the event of an auto accident.

Call the Police

In most cases, the first call should be to the police or 911, especially if there is an injury. Any auto accident with property damage, an injury, or death is required to be reported to the Florida DMV. If someone is seriously hurt, 911 will dispatch both the police and medical transport to the scene.

If you are seriously injured, you may be immediately taken to the nearest emergency room. However, if you are questioned at the scene by police about the accident, give them the facts but stay neutral. Do not accept or admit partial blame, even if you feel you may have been able to avoid the accident. Tell them exactly what you remember but retain a neutral stance on the events.  If at any point, the law enforcement officer advises you of your right to remain silent or indicates that he or she is conducting a criminal investigation, you should tell the officer immediately that you wish to consult with an attorney.

Auto Accident Insurance Information

It is always important to find out the auto accident insurance information of the other drivers involved. If the police are contacted, this information should be gathered in the police report. You will also need to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident.  You should consult an attorney prior to making a recorded statement regarding the facts of the accident.

Begin Gathering Information

If you are injured, you will need to take care of your injuries first, but when you are able, begin gathering information. Write or record what happened while it is still fresh in your mind. Pictures at the scene of the accident can be helpful, and you will want to keep all medical documents. Every detail you can obtain, from the weather, what occurred right before the accident, to the people who witnessed the crash, can all impact your case if you need to file an auto accident lawsuit for compensation.
